Raisin and grape - 2

Description

Raisins and Grapes (pun intended). See also [link]

This is conceptual; taking a page out of Jesus' way of reaching people, he spoke in parables and used metaphors more often than in-your-face bluntness, and even the disciples had to ask for explanations sometimes. So this is a figurative image about the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. If Jesus never rose from death, we could never experience the miracle that can change us from raisin back into a ripe grape.

If you're someone who doesn't like imagery explained, stop reading here! :)

-----------------------------

Explanation:

Without the life Jesus brings, we're are so much like a raisin. We were created to be fruit, but we dropped off the vine and have dried up to a dessicated and pitiful representation of our created life. Without restoration, we will simply decay further into a hard, dried and unidentifiable object to be tossed into the incinerator.

Jesus says, drink of the living water (Jn 4:10). Only he gives living water, and only then can the miracle of restoration occur.

Jesus also says, I am the vine (Jn 15:5) ... and only when you're part of the vine do you grow and bear fruit. Leave the vine and the inevitable awaits, you become a raisin.

This gift of restored life is only made possible because he overcame death first. It is out choice to drink or not (See Rev 2:11)

The imagery:
- the raisin is obvious ... that's us in our un-restored state ... a mere shadow of his created intention.
- the grape, likewise self-evident; we were created to be fruit, full, ripe, swollen with his life.
- the sand ... we live in a desert were there is no alternative water, and without intervention turn into a raisin (Heb 6:7-8)
- the rock ... we live in the shelter of God's grace, for a time that is. The shelter will one day be removed and we will stand exposed.
- the vine leaf ... and the grapes still on the stem ... because when we're connected to the vine, then we receive the sustenance that produces the full swollen grape, with the seeds of further growth inside.
- the water ... the Spirit falls like rain

And one can think of many more layers ... like water to wine! ;)
