what's a church service? by mordecai-pyre what's a church service? by mordecai-pyre
Photographed in the St Petersburg museum.

"Christ's appearance to the people" - Alexander Ivanov, 1806-1858.

Church gatherings bother me. I mean, how well do they really reflect a gathering of people in the presence of God? I mean, really ... it seems so artificial.

So I started imagining a conversation where I would be planning a church service to give people opportunity to meet Jesus:

--------------------
Lets plan a service, he said
OK, she said. What type of service? Postal service, catering service, security service, what service are you thinking of?
Twit ... a church service
Oh ... that's rather boring. Can't we do a catering service?
I'm serious ... lets plan a church service ... come on, it'll be fun.

I studied lots of gospel art in Art History classes but I never saw this one.

I was an accidental find while walking through the museum, and I loved it for the embedded stories.

Does it have more than one story in it? Because I really couldn't point out one that I could recognize.

Ah ... sub-stories I guess. Like the little boy tugging at what one presumes is his father, the guy at the bottom right turned to ask a question of his friend (what is his question?), and the person behind him bowed down on the ground (what's he feeling), or what could be an argument going on on the mid left, and the (presumably) Pharisees arrogantly (?) looking on in oversight as they stand separate on the right ... and so on. I love thinking about the sub-texts and trying to imagine the stories associated.

The work of the mastery of Biblically inspired art is without parallel.

Yep --- I love how the longer I look the more I see of the characters - there are so many stories in the image.
